Ask The Winemaker
What is VQA?
VQA is an acronym which stands for the Vintner’s Quality Alliance. According to the Wine Council of Ontario, the VQA “is a set of standards for winemaking excellence from the vineyard right through to the bottling line. To earn the VQA Medallion, an Ontario wine must meet these standards and then undergo complete laboratory and taste testing. If a wine has VQA on its label, you can be sure it is the absolute best Ontario has to offer.” For more information, visit: The Wine Council of Ontario
What is a Meritage?
According to the Meritage Association, the term combines the words ‘merit’ and ‘heritage’ and is used to name a blended style of wine derived from noble Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. In essence, just like we can’t call sparkling wine in Canada a ‘champagne’ unless if derives from that region, Bordeaux too is a trademarked variety that can only be called such if it comes from Bordeaux, France. In turn, only Icewine produced in Canada can be labeled a true Icewine. Mastronardi Estate Winery now offers a wonderful 2006 Meritage and a Limited Reserve Pavlo Signature Meritage.
